Baker (Seasonal, or Full-time)

TLDR: We’re looking for a baker to help with the holiday rush (now until Dec 23), who can continue in the full-time role on January 4th, after our winter break.

A typical work week is 38 to 40 hours on Thursdays through Mondays, between 6am and 3pm. Overtime will be expected during the 10 days prior to Christmas.

Compensation ranges from $18 to $21/hour, depending on qualifications and experience. Tip sharing averages an additional $1.50 to $2.50/hour.

If the right long-term candidate cannot be found, a candidate with seasonal availability would be considered.

WHO WE ARE. Sugared & Spiced Baked Goods – an Edmonton-original bake shop in the heart of Old Strathcona – is dedicated to a small batch, from scratch, one-of-a-kind bake shop experience. EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION You have 1-2 years of relevant fulltime experience in bakery production and customer service, and a pastry or culinary diploma. You must have a willingness to learn and the flexibility to adapt to the way we run a kitchen.

YOUR SKILLS & ABILITIES You are available to work full-time, weekends (required), holidays, and occasional evenings. You have excellent decorating skills. You have a positive personality even under pressure. You are great at multitasking, but never stop paying attention to details. You can consistently lift 50 Lbs. You can work on your feet for long periods. You have excellent listening skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills. You are a self starter, dependable, and consistent in your work. You work independently, and you follow instructions. You keep your workspace clean. You exhibit exceptional interpersonal skills, and you love people.

RESPONSIBILITIES • Daily production of baked goods as directed by Pastry Chef & Bakery Supervisor • Bake and assemble cakes, tarts, cookies, meringues, macarons, and squares • Prepare buttercream, curds, and fillings from scratch • Decorate cakes • Set-up and fill bakery showcases • Package orders for pick-up and delivery • Receive and store ingredients • Maintain cleanliness of work stations and all equipment and storage areas  • Provide outstanding customer service, in person and on the phone

Seasonal Bakery Assistant - Christmas Prep

Sugared & Spiced Baked Goods is seeking an enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Seasonal Retail Bakery Assistant during the festive season. This role involves crucial tasks related to the packaging of gingerbread house kits, scooping cookies, and providing customer assistance both in-person and over the phone.

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Gingerbread House Kit Packaging: Execute precise and aesthetically pleasing packaging of gingerbread house kits. Ensure the quality and presentation meet the standards of our bakery.
  2. Cookie Scooping: Master the art of cookie scooping with precision and consistency. Contribute to the production of high-quality baked goods through accurate portioning.
  3. Box Folding and Preparation: Assist in preparing packaging materials, including folding boxes and organizing them for efficient use during the bustling holiday period.
  4. Stocking and Inventory Control: Assist in restocking shelves, monitor inventory levels, and alert the team when supplies need replenishing.
  5. Maintaining Cleanliness: Keep the retail area and display cases tidy and well-organized.
  6. Customer Assistance: Answer phones and assist customers with inquiries, orders, and product information. Provide exceptional customer service during peak hours.
  7. Team Collaboration: Work closely with our small team to maintain a harmonious and efficient working environment. Be adaptable to switch between tasks as needed.

Key Qualifications:

  1. Previous experience in a retail or customer service role is a plus, but not required.
  2. Natural customer service abilities; ability to match the tone of the team and the brand.
  3. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  4. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, especially in packaging and presentation.
  5. Enthusiastic and positive attitude, especially during busy periods.
  6. Ability to handle multiple responsibilities, including answering phones and assisting customers during peak times.
  7. Basic math skills; ability to handle cash transactions accurately.
  8. Ready to work flexible hours, and availability to work weekends and evenings.
  9. Comfortable standing for extended periods.

Duration: Up to 4 weeks, approximately 30 hours/week. This is a seasonal position with an opportunity for extension based on performance and business needs.
